OWWA Launches Search for 2008 Model OFW Families of the Year

OWWA OIC Dir. Albert Valenciano and Dir. Vivian Tornea with representatives of OWWA corporate partners, (left to right) Ms. Maureen Laus of Banco de Oro, Ms. Patricia Riingen of Western Union and Mr. Adrian Joseph Fernandez of Globe Telecom during the launching of MOFYA 2008 last August 29 .
Filipinos have been crossing national borders to seek employment and seek good fortunes. But there are social costs resulting from overseas employment. Family members are being separated from each other. Children are reared by single or foster parents. OFWs find it difficult in coping with loneliness and other cultures. These circumstances continuously test the traditional family ties that we Filipinos value so much. And many OFW families were not able to cope, and disintegrated amidst these trials.

But there are also those who rose above these challenges and whose examples are worth emulating, not only by other OFW families, but also by the whole nation as well. And these OFW families are what the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) wants to recognize and honor when it started the Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA) in 2005.

The search for the Model OFW Family of the Year Award is an annual award-giving project designed to give recognition to outstanding OFW families, and promote best practices in achieving success in all aspects of their life in the face of overseas migration of one or more members of the household.

MOFYA National Awardees for 2007 with guest of honor, the honorable Vice-President Noli “Kabayan” de Castro and then OWWA Administrator and now DOLE Secretary Marianito Roque.
In awarding ceremonies held last December 5, 2007, the families of two seafarers and a household service worker were chosen as 2007 Model OFW Family of the Year National Awardees for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The MOFYA National Awardees for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are the families of OFWs Oscar A. de Jesus, Eugenio B. Atuel, Jr. and Virgencita A. Lagunsay respectively.

For MOFYA 2008, in emphasizing the importance of family values, the theme of the search is “Parangal sa Matatag na Pamilyang OFW”.

This year’s version of MOFYA is also a departure from the previous MOFYAs because, instead of national winners from the three island groups, there would be two national awardees, which would come from the land-based and sea-based OFWs. There would also be a total of thirty-four (34) regional awardees coming from the said OFW sectors in the country’s seventeen regions.

In addition, special recognition and prizes will be given to the OFW families who will earn the Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects Award and Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship Award.

The selection criteria for search are as follows:
  • Wholesome OFW Family;
  • Civic/Community involvement of OFWs and
  • their families;
  • Success in OFW and/or family member/s’ education or profession;
  • Success in managing family finances.
