Senator Estrada with the repatriated OFWs from UAE
|
Last 04 July 2008, some 14 documented and six undocumented overseas Filipino workers (OFW) were given tickets bound for Manila from the United Arab Emirates courtesy of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada.
Sen. Estrada, who chairs the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development and the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Labor and Employment, had initiated a fund to aid workers in the UAE who are victims of abuse and maltreatment.

The OFW domestic helpers, who were sheltered at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), absconded from their employers due to physical abuse, unpaid salaries, poor/inhumane working conditions, maltreatment, and even prostitution. These workers came from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
While at the UAE, Sen. Estrada met with Labor Minister Saqr Gobash Saeed Gobash for discussions on improving working conditions of household service workers. The senator, who is also an actor, also gave a free movie screening of his movie Katas ng Saudi to Filipino community leaders and families in Dubai.
The 20 OFWs arrived via Etihad Airlines Flight EY 428 from Abu Dhabi at three o'clock in the afternoon last 05 July 2008. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Repatriation Assistance Division facilitated the airport assistance and provided accommodations upon the arrival of the homecoming OFWs.
